Reading research since the 1930s has included the study of eye-movements. Up to 20% of eye-movements in reading are for regressions -- that is for re-reading words, usually just one or two words upstream from the word last read. Regressions, in many instances, reflect the reader's work and difficulty with parsing sentences.
