The natural processes that transform small samples of retinal data into rich, larger mental representations of objects and people are very powerful. However, these same processes are poorly engaged and are even stymied and thwarted by the visual structures of conventional block text.
The first step, that is, trying to serially home-in on one word after the other in conventional block text -- which appears as a Sea of Words -- has been called one of the most challenging tasks for the human visual system in modern civilization.
