Several years ago, researchers at Stanford used functional MRI scans to look for brain activity in college students (and they found some). What they found was that there was a direct correlation between the amount of brain activity in the occipital cortex, where visual information is processed, and the reading ability of the college students. Better readers had more brain activity in the occipital cortex than poorer readers.
